മധുബാലയും ദിലീപ് കുമാറും തമ്മിലുള്ള വിവാഹം മുടങ്ങാൻ കാരണം മതംമാറണമെന്ന പിടിവാശി

സംഘർഷഭരിതമായിരുന്നു ബോളിവുഡിലെ മെർലിൻ മൺറോ എന്നറിയപ്പെട്ടിരുന്ന മധുബാലയുടെ ജീവിതം. ഒരുകാലത്ത് ഇന്ത്യൻ സിനിമയിൽ ഏറ്റവും കൂടുതൽ തിളങ്ങി നിന്ന മധുബാല എന്ന നടിയുടെ പതനവും മരണവുമെല്ലാം വളരെ പെട്ടെന്നായിരുന്നു. ദിലീപ് കുമാർ, പ്രദീപ് കുമാർ, ഭരത് ഭൂഷൻ തുങ്ങി നിരവധി പേരുമായി പ്രണയബന്ധമുമുണ്ടായിരുന്ന മധുബാലയുടെ അധികമാർക്കുമാറിയാത്ത സംഘർഷഭരിതമായ ജീവിതകഥ വെളിപ്പെടുത്തിയിരിക്കുകയാണ് മാധ്യമപ്രവർത്തകനും ഫിലിംഫെയർ മാസികയുടെ എഡിറ്ററുമായ ജിതേഷ് പിള്ള.

മുംതാസ് ജെഹാൻ ബീഗം ദെഹ്ലാവി എന്ന മധുബാലയുടെ സംഭവബഹുലമായ ജീവിതം ഒരു ജ്യോത്സ്യൻ നേരത്തെ തന്നെ പ്രവചിച്ചിരുന്നുവെന്നാണ് ജിതേഷ് പറയുന്നത്. മധുബാലയുടെ അച്ഛന് 11 മക്കളായിരുന്നു. ഇവരിൽ അഞ്ച് കുട്ടികൾ മാത്രമേ ജീവിച്ചുള്ളു. നാലാമത്തെ കുട്ടിയാണ് മധുബാല. ചെറുപ്പം മുതൽ തന്നെ ബസന്ത് പോലുള്ള ചിത്രങ്ങളിൽ ബാലതാരമായി വെള്ളിത്തിരയിലെത്തിയ വ്യക്തിയാണ് മധുബാല. തന്റെ കുടുംബത്തിന്റെ ഏക ആശ്രയമായിരുന്നു തനിക്ക് കിട്ടുന്ന വരുമാനമെന്ന് ചെറുപ്പംമുതലേ തന്നെ മധുബാലയ്ക്ക് അറിയാമായിരുന്നു.

രാവിലെ 7 മണിക്ക് സ്റ്റുഡിയോയിലേക്ക് പോകുന്ന മധുബാല വൈകീട്ട് 6 മണിക്ക് വീട്ടിൽ തിരിച്ചെത്തും. പുറത്ത് അധികം കറങ്ങി നടക്കാനോ, സിനിമാ പ്രിമിയറുകളോ മറ്റ് പരിപാടികൾക്ക് പങ്കെടുക്കുവാനോ മധുബാലയ്ക്ക് അച്ഛൻ അനുവാദം നൽകിയിരുന്നില്ല. എന്തിനേറെ, മധുബാല എന്ന നടിക്ക് ഇതുമൂലം ആവിശ്യത്തിന് പ്രസ് കവറേജ് പോലും കിട്ടിയിരുന്നില്ല.

വളരെ ചെറുപ്പത്തിൽ തന്നെ ഒരു താരമായി മാറിയിട്ടും, താരപ്പകിട്ടോ താര ജാഡയോ ഒരിക്കലും മധബാലയെ ബാധിച്ചിരുന്നില്ല. വീട്ടിൽ നൈറ്റിയിടാനും ഇഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടിരുന്ന മധുബാലയ്ക്ക് വെള്ള സാരിയോടും കുന്ദൻ ആഭരണങ്ങളോടും വല്ലാത്ത ഭ്രമമായിരുന്നു. പലപ്പോഴും ഒരു പർദ്ദയണിഞ്ഞ് ഒരും അറിയാതെ വഴിയോര കച്ചവടക്കാരിൽ നിന്നും ഭേൽപൂരിയും ചാട്ടും കഴിക്കാൻ മധുബാല പോകുമായിരുന്നു.

ആ സമയത്ത് മധുബാലയുടെ വീട്ടിലെ സ്ഥിരം സന്ദർശകനായിരുന്നു ദിലീപ് കുമാർ. മധുബാലയും ദിലീപ് കുമാറും പ്രണയത്തിലാകുന്നതും അങ്ങനെയാണ്. മധുബാലയുടെ അച്ഛൻ ദിലീപ് കുമാറിനോട് വിവാഹക്കാര്യം സംസാരിച്ചുവെന്നും എന്നാൽ ദിലീപിന് അതൊരു ബിസിനസ്സ് പോലെയാണ് തോന്നിയതെന്നും ദിലീപ്് കുമാറിന്റെ ആത്മകഥയിൽ പറയുന്നു. എന്നാൽ 9 വർഷം നീണ്ടുനിന്ന ആ പ്രണയം തകരാൻ കാരണം ദിലീപ് കുമാർ മതം മാറണമെന്ന ആവിശ്യമാണെന്നും പറയുന്നുണ്ട്.

കമാൽ അംരൊഹിയും മധുബാലയും തമ്മിൽ പ്രണയത്തിലാണെന്ന വാർത്തയും അക്കാലത്ത് പ്രചരിച്ചിരുന്നു. ഇരുവരുടേയും വിവാഹക്കാര്യവും ചർച്ചയിലുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. എന്നാൽ കമാലിന്റെ രണ്ടാം ഭാര്യയാകാൻ മധുബാലയ്ക്ക് താൽപ്പര്യമില്ലായിരുന്നു. ഒരുകാലത്ത് അനാർക്കലി ന്നെ ചിത്രത്തിൽ അനാർക്കലിയായി കമാൽ അംരോഹി പരിഗണിച്ചിരുന്നത് മീനകുമാരിയെയാണ്. മീന കുമാരിയും മധുബാലയും തമ്മിൽ ശത്രുതയുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. ഒടുവിൽ അനാർക്കലിയായി ബിന റായിയും, മുഗൾ ഇ ആസമിൽ മധുബാലയും വേഷമിട്ടു.

ദിലീപ് കുമാറിന് ശേഷം പ്രദീപ് കുമാർ, ഭാരത് ഭൂഷൻ, കിഷോർ കുമാർ എന്നിവരുടെ വിവാഹാഭ്യർത്ഥനകളും മധുബാലയ്ക്ക് ലഭിച്ചിരുന്നു. താൻ ഇതിൽ ആരെ വിവാഹം കഴിക്കണമെന്ന് നർഗീസിനോട് ചോദിച്ചിരുന്നു. നർഗീസ് ഭാരത് ഭൂഷന്റെ പേരാണ് പറഞ്ഞത്. എന്നാൽ മധുബാല പറഞ്ഞത് കിഷോറിന്റെ പേരാണ്. ജുംറൂ, ചൽതി കാ നാം ഗാഡി, ഹാഫ് ടിക്കറ്റ് എന്നീ ചിത്രങ്ങളിൽ ഇരുവരും ഒന്നിച്ച് അഭിനയിച്ചിരുന്നു.

ഹാഫ് ടിക്കറ്റിൽ അഭിനയിച്ചരുന്നപ്പോഴേക്കും മധുബാലയുടെ ആരോഗ്യസ്ഥിതി വഷളായിക്കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു. കിഷോർ മതം മാറുകയും മധുബാലയെ ലണ്ടനിലേക്ക് കൊണ്ടുപോകുകയും ചെയ്തു. ഹൃദയ ശസ്ത്രക്രിയ ചെയ്താൽ മധുബാലയുടെ ജീവൻ തന്നെ അപകടത്തിലാകുമെന്നതുകൊണ്ട് ഒരു ശസ്ത്രകിയയ്ക്ക് ഡോക്ടർമാർ മുതിർന്നില്ല.

കിഷോറിന്റെ മാതാപിതാക്കൾ വിവാഹത്തിനെതിരായിരുന്നു. അതുകൊണ്ട് അവർ ബാന്ദ്രയിലേക്ക് വീട് മാറി. ശേഷം മധുബാലയെ മധുബാലയുടെ സ്വന്തം വീട്ടിൽ കിഷോർ താമസിപ്പിച്ചു. തന്റെ കരിയറിന്റെ തുടക്കമായതിനാൽ മധുബാലയെ ശ്രദ്ധിക്കാൻ സമയമില്ലെന്നുപറഞ്ഞാണ് കിഷോർ മധുബാലയെ വീട്ടിലേക്ക് മാറ്റുന്നത്. എന്നാൽ അതൊരു തെറ്റായിപ്പോയി.

‘മാസത്തിലൊരിക്കലൊക്കെയാണ് പിന്നീട് കിഷോർ മധുബാലയെ കാണാൻ വന്നിരുന്നത്. ആ കൂടിക്കാഴ്ച്ചകളിലെല്ലാം കണ്ണീരും കുറ്റപ്പെടുത്തലുകളും മാത്രമായി. പതിയെ പതിയെ മധുബാലയ്ക്ക് അസൂയ തോന്നിത്തുടങ്ങി. തന്നെ അവഗണിക്കുന്നുവെന്നും മറ്റുപെൺകുട്ടികളുടെ പിറകെ പോകുന്നുവെന്നും പറഞ്ഞ് കിഷോറിനെ തുടരെ കുറ്റപ്പെടുത്താൻ തുടങ്ങി.’- മധുബാലയുടെ സഹോദരി പറയുന്നു

ആരോഗ്യസ്ഥിതി അത്രയേറെ മോശമായിരുന്ന മധുബാലയ്ക്ക് കിഷോറിന്റെ സ്‌നേഹവും സാമിപ്യവമുായിരുന്നു ആ സമയത്ത് ആവിശ്യം. ഒരു ദിവസം കിഷോറിന് മധുബാലയുടെ അച്ഛന്റെ അടുത്തുനിന്നും ഒരു ഫോൺ വന്നു. മധുബാലയുടെ സ്ഥിതി ഗുരുതരമാണെന്നും ഒരുപക്ഷേ അവളെ ഇനി കാണാൻ കഴിയില്ലെന്നുമായിരുന്നു സന്ദേശം. അന്ന് മധുബാല തന്റെ ദുരിതം നിറഞ്ഞ ജീവിതത്തോട് എന്നെന്നേക്കുമായി വിടപറഞ്ഞു. ഇസ്ലാം മതാചാരപ്രകാരമാണ് കിഷോർ മധുബാലയെ സംസ്‌കരിച്ചത്. അങ്ങനെ 36 ആം വയസ്സിൽ മധുബാല യാത്രയായി…

A najoomi (soothsayer) had predicted a short but illustrious life for #Madhubala. Her father had 11 children, only five daughters survived and Madhubala was the fourth child. She began as a child artiste for films like Basant. She was the meal ticket to a large family. The initial years were filled with hardship and poverty. While her father didn’t go to the studios much after she became a star, he ruled with an iron hand. She left for the studio at 7 am and had to return home by 6 and have dinner with the entire family. Her allure was so enhanced by the fact that she wasn’t allowed too many outings, premieres and events. Even the press coverage was minimal. At one point the entire press had ganged up against father and daughter. She wore maxis at home, was fond of white sarees and Kundan jewellery. Not one to diet, she would wear a burkha, gather her siblings into her Plymouth and drive to chowpatty to have bhel and other savouries. Dilip Kumar was a regular visitor to the house and gradually Madhubala too began writing shayaris. A English tutor too was employed for her. Dilip Kumar’s biography seems to suggest that her father wanted him to marry her and only do films for their banner and it appeared to the thespian as some sort of “business” proposal. Madhubala kept a diary where she recorded her shayaris and other intimate thoughts. The diaries have mysteriously disappeared since her death. Some sort of unspoken rivalry existed between #MeenaKumari and Madhubala. Perhaps the fact that they shared in common mentors like #Kidarsharma and #KamaalAmrohi had got to do with. There was also talk that during #Mahal, Madhubala and Amrohi had gotten pretty close and marriage was discussed. But Madhubala reportedly wasn’t willing to settle as his second wife. Incidentally Amrohi had toyed with the idea of making #Anarkali with Meena Kumari. Finally Madhubala landed the plum role in k Asif’s #mughaleazam, while #BinaRai played the eponymous #Anarkali in another film of by the same name released in 1953. Meena Kumari passed away in 1972 at age 40. Madhubala in 1969. She was 36.

The utterly gorgeous #Madhubala had many suitors. The first of her suitors was Premnath. But the affair was short lived as it was reported that there was talk of his conversion to Islam which he refused. Then followed was a tumultuous and passionate romance with #DilipKumar for almost 9 years. Which ended with a court case and heartbreak. Madhubala allegedly had other suitors like #PradeepKumar, #BharatBhushan and #KishoreKumar. The story goes that she had even asked Nargis who to marry. Nargis had vouched for Bharat Bhushan because he was a widower. Madhubala opted for the free spirited Kishore. They had worked in films like #Jhumroo, #chaltikanaamgadi and #halfticket. By the time of half ticket Madhubala’s health was rapidly failing. Kishore reportedly converted and married Madhubala and took her to London. The surgeons advised against an open heart surgery as they said it could be life threatening and gave her two years to live. Since Kishore’s parents refused to accept the marriage, they moved to quarter deck on carter road, bandra . But the sea air didn’t do her too good. So Kishore brought her back to her parents house. That was a mistake. He said he wouldn’t be able to give her complete care as he was just getting his career together and travelling . Madhubala’s sister remembers he would come visiting maybe once a month. The meetings would end in tears and recriminations. The exceedingly beautiful Madhubala was reportedly slowly turning possessive. She had become skin and bone ravaged by illness. Over come with jealousy, she would accuse Kishore of neglect and chasing other women. Gradually her health deteriorated further. She wanted companionship, tenderness, love. For some reason that eluded her. On the day she was breathing her last, Madhubala’s father called up Kishore who was leaving for a show and feared that besides losing money, he would earn the wrath of the organisers. Madhubala’s father is said to have told him that he may never see again. That day Madhubala passed away. Kishore buried her according to Muslim tradition. A beautiful life prematurely snuffed out.
